How to Become a Model

Instructions

Step 1 Consider your physical characteristics: Are you 5-foot-7 or taller? You should wear a size 4 to 6, and you should have a 32- to 35-inch bust, a 22- to 25-inch waist, and 33- to 36-inch hips.

Step 2 Determine whether you have any distinctive features.

Step 3 Work on having clear skin, healthy hair and straight teeth.

Step 4 Consider your mental attitude: You should be ambitious, confident, organized, willing to travel or move to foreign cities, able to spend and invest wisely and able to take rejection.

Step 5 Visit local modeling agencies to find an agent willing to help you build a portfolio.

Step 6 Go to castings and "go-sees" with your portfolio in hand to win potential clients and get modeling jobs.

Step 7 Be prompt and professional. Exhibit the confidence that you will use to sell products.

Tips & Warnings

# Catalog models don't always have to be 5-foot-7 or taller, but they do have to be thin. Runway models are required to be at least 5-foot-9.

# Teen or junior models must be 5-foot-6 and at least 12 years old, with youthful looks.

# Modeling is not always glamorous. Long days of castings and go-sees, long trips on the road, rejection and stiff competition can be stressful.

# Speak with a reputable professional before deciding whether modeling is for you.

How to Become a Model for Free

1 If you are a female between 5'10" and 6', and your hips are no bigger than 35 inches, you should consider Editorial and Runway modeling.
For men, you must be between 6' and 6'3", with no bigger than a 32 inch waist.

If you are any size or height, then Commercial Print modeling is for you.

2 Ask a friend, family member, or significant other to take a few pictures of you. Have them take a headshot (close-up picture of your face looking straight forward, for Editorial- no smile), profile (close-up picture of your face from the side), and bodyshot (full-length photo, preferably in a swimsuit).

3 To find an agency, go to models.com and upload your pictures onto a free profile. There, you have the opportunity to be scouted by numerous Editorial and Commercial agencies around the world.

4 Be persistent. If you are not contacted by an agency, search the models.com agency database. Find agencies that you feel your look is suitable for (e.g: Editorial, Commercial Print).

5 If an email address is listed on the agency's profile, email your models.com profile to them (You will be provided with your own link/URL to your profile). If no email address is listed, go to the agency's website, and submit your pictures through their "contact" or "become a model" link.

6 Many agencies also have "open call" information on their websites (About an hour set aside during one day per week/month when aspiring Models can come down to the agency to show an Agent their pictures/book-portfolio.)
